PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Powered by seven different Mavericks recording a shot on goal, the No. 9 Mercy University Women's Soccer Team earned a 0-0 draw at Chestnut Hill College on Wednesday night at Victory Field.
The Mavericks (2-0-1) remain unbeaten on the year, while the Griffins (0-1-2) earn their second draw of the season.
Senior Angelina Ortiz (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) recorded the Mavericks' first shot on goal in the 2nd minute of action and another in the 15th minute. Freshman Astrid Borglund (Stockholm, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium), junior Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur), freshman Elizabeth Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and sophomore Gracie DiPalo (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) each forced Chestnut Hill goalie Ellie Stratz to make a save in the first half. However, the game remained scoreless at halftime.
Ortiz, senior Sarah Lill Hanks (Skedsmokorset, Norway/High Point University), Crawford, DiPalo and sophomore Rosa Pistone (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) made Stratz make five more saves early in the second half. Ortiz had a shot hit the crossbar in the 88th minute and Metzger had one last shot stopped by Stratz to see the game end in a scoreless tie. Mercy's backline surrendered just two Chestnut Hill shots with neither coming on target.
Mercy was led by Ortiz who had a game-high three shots on goal and by Metzger, Crawford and DiPalo who each had two shots on goal. Junior Heiddis Sigurdardottir (Garðabær, Iceland/University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) earned the shutout without having to make a save.
Chestnut Hill was led by Stratz who made a game-high 12 saves.
Mercy held a 20-2 edge in shots, a 12-0 edge in shots on goal and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 5th when they play at RV Franklin Pierce at 1 p.m.
