AMHERST, N.Y. – Powered by a hat trick from freshman Astrid Borglund (Stockholm, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) and a goal from junior Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur), the Mercy University Women's Soccer Team earned a 4-0 win at ECC foe Daemen University on Saturday afternoon at Royal Park.
The Mavericks (5-2-3, 2-0 ECC) are 2-0-1 in their last three games and start 2-0 in ECC play for the first time since 2022. Mercy defeats the Wildcats (1-7-1, 0-2 ECC) for the third straight time and win at Daemen for the first time since 2022.
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when Borglund scored her first goal of the day to give the Mavericks an early 1-0 lead.
Junior Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) made a save in the 14th minute to keep the Mavericks ahead 1-0 and Mercy headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute when Borglund scored her second goal of the game. Junior Ana Polychroniades (Smithtown, N.Y./St. John's Preparatory) fed Borglund a pass after a Metzger shot was stopped by Daemen goalkeeper Rylee Kumer.
Metzger increased the Mercy lead to 3-0 in the 79th minute when she received a pass from senior Femke Demets (Avelgem, Belgium/University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) and fired the ball from well outside the box making its way above the outstretched hands of a leaping Kumer.
Borglund finished off the scoring with a goal in the final minute of play, putting away a senior Ella Gallino (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug) through ball, giving Mercy the 4-0 road win.
Mercy was led by Borglund who recorded her second hat trick of the season and now has a team-high eight goals and 16 points on the year. Metzger netted her third goal of the season and Polychroniades dished out her first assist of the season. Demets and Gallino both added their second assists of the year. Becker made three saves to earn her third win of the season and second shutout of the year.
Daemen was led by Kumer who made a game-high five saves.
Mercy held a 16-4 edge in shots and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Daemen held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 3rd when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m.
