AMHERST, N.Y. – Powered by goals from seniors Pau Ramon (Mallorca, Spain/Southeastern CC) and Jacob Darwesh Lund-Iversen (Oslo, Norway/Maryville University/Pima CC), the Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 2-1 win at ECC foe Daemen University on Saturday afternoon at Royal Park.
The Mavericks (6-2-2, 1-1 ECC) pick up their first ECC win of the season and improve to 13-0 all-time against the Wildcats (1-7-2, 1-2 ECC).
Mercy goalkeeper graduate student Sean Green (Asheville, N.C./Lees-McRae College) made two saves in the first eight minutes of action before Daemen scored in the 11th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Jordan Hernandez deflected in a Nolan Smith cross to give the hosts an early lead.
Green made two more saves in the half to keep the score 1-0 at halftime.
The score remained 1-0 until the 73rd minute when Ramon headed in a senior John Hollis (Bradford, England/West Virginia Wesleyan College) corner kick to tie the game at 1-1.
The Mavericks took a 2-1 lead in the 87th minute when Lund-Iversen fired a shot that deflected off a Daemen defender and into the goal to give Mercy their first lead of the day. The Mavericks backline held the Wildcats without a shot for the remainder of the game to earn the 2-1 road win.
Mercy was led by Ramon who scored his first goal of the season and by Lund-Iversen who recorded his team-leading 10th goal of the season. Hollis dished out his team-leading sixth assist of the year. Green made a game-high four saves to earn his third win of the season.
Daemen was led by Hernandez who scored a goal.
Mercy held a 19-8 edge in shots, a 6-5 edge in shots on goal and a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, September 29th when they host Saint Anselm at 2:30 p.m.
