Martinez, Dutilh, and Lysoe Score as No. 23 Men's Soccer Earns 3-2 Win Over Saint Anselm

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by goals from juniors Joel Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Mount Aloysius College) and Santiago Dutilh (Santiago, Chile/Everest School) and sophomore Nicolai Lysoe (Kristiansand, Norway/Kristiansand Katedralskole Gimle), the No. 23 Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 3-2 win over Saint Anselm College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (7-2-2) have won two games in a row and defeat the Hawks (4-5) in the schools' first meeting since 2013.

Mercy came out firing with senior John Hollis (Bradford, England/West Virginia Wesleyan College) and junior Philip Hauge (Bergen, Norway/Central Connecticut State University) forcing Saint Anselm goalkeeper David Hood to make a pair of early saves. The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Martinez headed in a Hollis corner kick.

The Mavericks later made it 2-0 in the 17th minute when Dutilh scored following a junior Herman Borke (Asker, Norway/Donski Videregaende Skole) pass. Graduate student Sean Green (Asheville, N.C./Lees-McRae College) made a save in the 33rd minute to keep Mercy ahead 2-0 at halftime.

Saint Anselm scored in the 48th minute to make it 2-1 after Khoi Totten scored. The Mavericks responded in the 55th minute when Lysoe headed in a corner kick by junior Juan Gonzalez (Paterson, N.J./NJIT) that was deflected over to Lysoe by freshman Marvin Spets (Oslo, Norway/Blindern Videregaaende Skole), giving Mercy a 3-1 lead.

The score remained 3-1 until the 81st minute when a Saint Anselm free kick was deflected into the goal by a Mercy defender for an own goal, making it 3-2.

Junior Harry Cooke (Saint Albans, England/D'Youville University) made a save in the 86th minute to keep Mercy ahead 3-2 and the Mavericks held off the Hawks for the 3-2 win.

Mercy was led by Martinez and Dutilh who both scored their first goals of the season. Lysoe scored his first collegiate goal and the game-winning goal. Hollis dished out his team-leading seventh assist of the year and Borke added his third assist of the season. Gonzalez and Spets both contributed their second assists of the year. Graduate student Sean Green made one save in the first half and junior Harry Cooke made two saves in the second half to earn the win.

Saint Anselm was led by Totten who scored and by David Hood who made a game-high five saves.

Mercy held a 24-7 edge in shots, a 10-4 edge in shots on goal and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 3rd when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
