Mercy College Head Baseball Coach Chris Schoen has announced the addition of Mercy College alum Matt Nalbone as an assistant coach for the 2019 season.
Prior to attending Mercy, Nalbone attended Islip High School where he was named All-League. Nalbone was a four-year member of the Mercy College baseball program, setting the school record for strikeouts in a career with 205. Nalbone posted a career 4.13 ERA with 14 wins and 263.2 innings pitched, ranking second in program history in wins and innings pitched. As a senior in 2017, Nalbone was named Second Team All-ECC after winning a team-high four games in a team-high 73.2 innings pitched with a 4.40 ERA. During his junior season, Nalbone led the Mavericks with 68 strikeouts and had a team-best ERA of 2.85. The native of Islip posted a 3.77 ERA with 47 strikeouts as a sophomore and was twice named ECC Pitcher of the Week.
During the summer of 2016, Nalbone played in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League for the Torrington Titans. After playing for the Mavericks, Nalbone attended a pre-draft workout for the Pittsburgh Pirates and played in the South Florida Winter League. Last season, Nalbone served as the pitching coach for Division III St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn).
"I am beyond excited to be a part of the Maverick family again. Coach Schoen and the rest of the coaching staff welcomed me back with open arms and it is an opportunity that I am grateful for. Being a Maverick as a player is something I'll cherish forever. I couldn't be more excited to use my experiences to give back to our current players," stated Nalbone.
"I am very excited to welcome back Matt Nalbone to the coaching staff. Matt set the all-time record for strikeouts as well as being in the top 10 in several yearly and career categories in his four years at Mercy. Anytime you can add someone who has lived it as a player with success becomes an asset to our staff," said Schoen.
