DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2017) – Despite a combined 15 saves from juniors Julia Amell(Greene, N.Y./Greene) and Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 4 Saint Anselm College on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (2-9) drop their fifth straight game, while the Hawks (10-0) remain unbeaten on the year.

Amell made the start in goal and made six saves in the first half before giving way to Pettit who played the second half and made nine saves. Freshman Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) added a shot on goal.

Saint Anselm received two goals from Mia Vecchione and goals from Leika Scott, Anna Drakeley and Mary Nee.

Mercy faced a tough task in facing the No. 4 team in the country, but they would keep Saint Anselm off the board until the 9th minute when Vecchione scored off an assist from Emma Kincaid to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

It remained 1-0 until the 25th minute when Scott scored following a pass from Vecchione that put Saint Anselm up 2-0. It remained 2-0 heading into halftime with Amell making six saves in the frame to keep the Mavericks in the contest.

The second half saw Pettit keep the Hawks off the board until Vecchione tallied her second of the day in the 48th minute to increase the lead to 3-0. Saint Anselm went on to add two more goals to finish off the scoring on the day.

The Hawks held a 24-2 edge in shots and a 14-4 advantage in penalty corners.
