DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2017) – Despite the first collegiate goal from freshman Kellie Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to ECAC Division II Field Hockey League foe Newberry College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (2-10, 0-7 ECAC) have dropped six games in a row, while the Wolves (5-6, 2-4 ECAC) snap a four-game losing streak with the win.
Znaniecki finished with a team-high three shots, while junior Angela Robbins (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) and freshman Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) corded an assist. Junior Marissa Spinazzola (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) picked up a defensive save and junior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) played the full 70 minutes in the cage with five saves to take the loss.
Newberry received goals from Brady Keeler and Megan Eisenhardt. Goalie Allison Davis made three saves to earn the win.
Mercy looked to pick up their first ECAC win of the season and would score first in the 16th minute when Znaniecki found the back of the cage to give the Mavericks a 1-0 advantage. The freshman received a cross from Robbins after Anthony played the ball and put the ball past Davis to put Mercy ahead.
It remained 1-0 at halftime as Pettit made a pair of saves and Spinazzola recorded her defensive save to keep the Wolves off the board. The two teams were even in shots in the first half at 4-4.
Pettit made a save to open the second half before Keeler scored in the 42nd minute off a pass from Kristyna Oyola to tie the game up at 1-1. Newberry continued to apply pressure, but Pettit made two more saves to keep it a 1-1 game. The game remained 1-1 until the 48th minute when Eisenhardt fired the game-winning goal into the cage after a pass from Keeler following a penalty corner, making it 2-1.
The Mavericks would be unable to find the equalizer as Davis made three saves late in the second half to preserve the win for the Wolves.
Newberry held a 10-9 edge in shots and Mercy held a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks look to bounce back when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday, October 10th at 4 p.m.
