DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2017) – Powered by goals from senior Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif. / South Hills) and junior Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif. / Torrance), the Mercy College women's soccer team defeated ECC foe Molloy College, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks improve to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play and have won nine games in a row. The Lions fall to 4-6-2 and are 2-3 in the East Coast Conference.
Noble led the Mavericks with one goal, six shots, and five shots on goal. Serna was another force for the Mavericks offense, finishing the afternoon with one goal, two shots, and two shots on goal. Redshirt junior Ileen Mejia (Whittier, Calif. / La Mirada) dished out one assist in the victory. Sophomore Ally Boots (Yorba Linda, Calif. / Esperanza HS) and junior Kendall Wright (Mission Viejo, Calif. / Mission Viejo) both recorded shots on goal in the contest. Freshman Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) played a full 90 minutes in goal and recorded zero saves.
Five Lions recorded shots in the contest. Jackie Carty saw a full 90 minutes of action in the net and had eight saves to take the loss.
The Mavericks wasted no time to get on the board in this afternoon's contest. Serna came out with a fire and was able to record a goal in the opening minute of the first half when she shot from the right to find the lower left corner of the net. The Lions were able to fire off two shots in the first half, with their closest scoring opportunity coming from Dana Poetzsch when she had a one-on-one opportunity against Torres, but was unable to score as her shot missed the far post. The Mavericks would enter halftime with a 1-0 lead over the Lions.
Mercy was able to build on their 1-0 lead in the second half, as Noble was able to find the back of the net in the 51st minute when Mejia was able to send the ball in off a corner to allow Noble to execute her opportunity. Despite taking three shots on goal in the second half, Lions were unable to find the back of the net and eventually fell 2-0 to the Mavericks.
Mercy held a 14-5 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 14th when they face University of New Haven in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
