Wilson Scores Team-High 16 Points as Women's Basketball Defeats Bloomfield, 80-59

SPARKILL, N.Y. (Nov. 11, 2017) – Powered by a team-high 16 points from sophomore Caralie Wilson (Gold Coast, Australia/John Paul College), the Mercy College women's basketball team earned an 80-59 victory over Bloomfield College on Saturday afternoon at St. Thomas Aquinas College.

The Mavericks (2-0) start 2-0 for the first time since 2014-15 and beat the Bears (0-2) for the first time.

Wilson went 7-of-14 from the field, while senior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) added 15 points and three rebounds. Senior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) contributed 13 points and junior Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) netted nine points. Senior Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn./Saint Bernard) and freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) added a team-high six rebounds.

Bloomfield was led by Deja Mckenzie who had a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds.

The Bears opened up the contest on a 9-0 run and looked to be running away from the Mavericks. However, Mercy ensued with a 16-7 run, capped off by a Clark layup, which tied the score up at 16-16 with 17 seconds left in the quarter. An Alexia' Tucker jumper just before the buzzer gave Bloomfield an 18-16 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter proved to be all Mavericks as they outscored the Bears 20-4 in the period. Mercy began the period on a 10-0 run that was finished off by Wilson, giving the Mavericks a 26-18 lead with 3:23 left in the half. After Bloomfield cut the Mercy lead to six, the Mavericks concluded the half on a 10-2 run to take a 36-22 lead at halftime following a Sullivan three-pointer.

Mercy shot 48.2 percent in the first half from the floor and went 4-of-12 from downtown. Bloomfield shot only 37.5 percent in the opening half and went 4-of-10 from the foul line.

Keane-Dawes opened the third quarter with a three to put Mercy up 39-22. The lead remained in double figures for the remainder of the quarter and a Wilson three at the buzzer gave the Mavericks their largest lead of the game, 62-43, at that point of the game.

The Mavericks began the fourth quarter on a 9-4 run to take their largest lead of the game, 71-47, with 6:54 left to play. Mercy held a 20-plus point lead for the remainder of the contest in securing their second straight win to begin the season.

Mercy shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the floor, 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from long distance and 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the foul line. Bloomfield shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the floor, 0 percent (0-of-8) from downtown and 50.0 percent (11-of-22) from the charity stripe.

Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks look to make it three wins in a row when they host Felician University on Wednesday, November 15th at 7 p.m. at Westchester Community College.
