DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2017) – Powered by goals from juniors Angela Robbins (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) and Kayly Bryan (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 2-0 victory over Molloy College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (2-4) have won two of their last three games, while the Lions (0-6) remain winless on the year.
Robbins and Bryan both recorded their second goals of the season and senior Kimberly Sands(Bethel, Conn./Immaculate) added an assist. Junior goalie Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made four saves to earn the shutout victory.
Molloy was led by Christina Carbone who had two shots on goal. Goalie Tara Byrnes made 11 saves to take the loss.
Mercy looked to get back to their winning ways and wasted little time as Robbins scored the opening goal of the game in the second minute of action to put the Mavericks ahead 1-0. The junior received a cross from Sands and fired the ball into the right side of the cage to give Mercy an early lead.
The Mavericks continued to fire away and forced Byrnes to make eight saves in the opening frame but could not add onto their lead, as they headed into halftime up 1-0.
The second stanza saw Mercy continue to dominate the action and Bryan finally got the Mavericks an insurance goal in the 64th minute when she fired a shot from just inside the circle into the upper left corner of cage, giving Mercy a 2-0 lead.
The Mavericks would hold on for the win as Mercy's defense did not surrender a Molloy shot in the second half.
Mercy held a 24-4 edge in shots, while Molloy held an 11-10 advantage in penalty corners.
Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, September 17th when they host Limestone College at 11 a.m.
