OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 23, 2017) – Led by a goal and an assist from junior Haley Noble(Torrance, Calif./Torrance), the Mercy College women's soccer team opened ECC play with a 3-0 victory over NYIT on Saturday afternoon at President's Stadium.
The Mavericks (6-1, 1-0 ECC) have now won four games in a row, while the Bears (2-4, 0-1 ECC) see their two-game winning streak come to an end.
Noble had a team-high five shots on goal and scored her second goal of the season, while sophomores Jessica Brandt (Folsom, Calif./Folsom) and Ally Boots (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) also scored. Freshman Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made the start in goal and played the first half. Senior Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) played the second half in goal and earned the win to improve to 2-1.
NYIT was led by Astasia Williams-Bertles who had a team-high two shots, while goalkeeper Jessie Sabal made seven saves in a losing effort.
Mercy looked to open up ECC play on a high note, but Sabal was up to the challenge in the opening half as she made five saves to keep the score at 0-0 heading into halftime.
The Mavericks wasted little time in getting on the board in the second half as Noble scored following a corner kick by senior Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills), giving Mercy a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute. Less than four minutes later Noble was on a breakaway and passed the ball across the goal to Boots who fired into an empty net to put the Mavericks up 2-0 in the 51st minute.
Mercy did not stop there as Brandt got into the scoring column with a goal off a free kick in the 54th minute that increased the Mavericks advantage to 3-0. Noble looked for another goal in the 60th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar to keep the game at 3-0.
The Mercy backline would hold its own the rest of the way not allowing a shot on goal the entire game to give the Mavericks a win in their ECC opener.
Mercy held an 18-3 edge in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, September 28th when they host Holy Family University at 4 p.m.
