DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2017) – Powered by a two-goal afternoon from junior Corinna Ferrante (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) and three assists from sophomore Trista Seara(Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst), the Mercy College women's soccer team exploded for seven goals in a 7-1 victory over Holy Family University at Mercy Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Mavericks (7-1) have won five in a row and the seven goals scored were the most since an 8-0 victory over Nyack on September 19, 2015. The Tigers (7-2) see their first loss on the road this season.
Ferrante recorded two goals along with one assist, three shots on goal, and four shots total on the afternoon. Senior Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif. / South Hills) recorded one goal and three shots on goal. Sophomore Ally Boots (Yorba Linda, Calif. / Esperanza), sophomore Natalia Elizarraras (Whittier, Calif. / Los Altos), junior Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif. / Torrance) and redshirt sophomore RaeAnn Ioannou (Bethpage, N.Y. / Plainedge) all recorded one goal and one shot on goal. Senior Alexandra Modlinski (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Cornwall) and redshirt sophomore Christina Psomopoulos (Bayside, N.Y. / Youngstown State) both dished out assists in the victory. Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) played a full 90 minutes in the net, recording three saves and improving to five wins on the year.
Holy Family was led by Brianna Rock, who recorded the lone goal for the Tigers. Rock was assisted by Steganie Ulmer. Emily Camp made the start in the net for the Tigers, recording seven saves. Brianna Pudlo played the remaining 45 minutes to close out the contest.
The Mavericks wasted little time getting on the board, as Elizarraras was able to find the back of the net in the first four minutes of play off a rebound from Seara. Seara then dished out another successful ball when Serna was able to find take a shot in the lower right to improve the score to 2-0 with 5:10 on the clock. Seara proved to be the playmaker of the game, as she crossed the ball to Noble in the 11th minute to make it a 3-0 game.
The Mavericks continued to fire away and would add onto their lead in the 23rd minute when Boots found the back of the net off a deflection following a corner. The Mavericks continued to dominate and would tack on another goal just seven minutes later when Ioannou capitalized on a cross shot from Ferrante, deflecting the ball to the lower right of the net to make the score 5-0.
Ferrante then took the remainder of the first half into her own hands, as she recorded the final two goals of the half in less than a minute. With 39:52 on the clock, Ferrante was able to find the upper right hand of the net to make the score 6-0. Just 44 seconds later, she would be able to find the net again off of a cross ball from Psomopoulos. The first half ended with Mercy holding a 7-0 lead over the Tigers.
The Mavericks were unable to find the back of the net in the second half, as the Tigers did not allow them to take a shot. Rock was able to get the Tigers on the board in the 62nd minute of play, as she received a through ball from Ulmer and found the lower right corner in the net.
Mercy finished with an 18-5 edge in shots. The Tigers held a 7-3 advantage in saves.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 30th when they host Queens College in an ECC matchup at 12pm.
