ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Sept. 23, 2017) – Despite a goal from junior Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), the Mercy College field hockey team fell 2-1 to ECAC Division II Field Hockey League foe Bellarmine University on Saturday afternoon at Hunter Stadium.
The Mavericks (2-7, 0-6 ECAC) remain winless in ECAC play, while the Knights (2-5, 1-3 ECAC) snap a five-game losing streak.
Williams had one shot on goal, while freshman Kellie Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) added an assist and a shot on goal. Junior Angela Robbins (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) recorded Mercy's other shot on goal and junior goalkeeper Julia Amell(Greene, N.Y./Greene) made five saves on the day.
Bellarmine received goals from April Paulson and Elle Lichte. Goalkeeper Heather Gregory made two saves to pick up the win.
The Knights came out as the aggressors early on, forcing Amell to make two saves in the first two minutes of action. Robbins followed with Mercy's first shot on goal in the 8th minute before Amell stopped another shot in the 12th minute.
Bellarmine finally broke the scoreless tie in the 25th minute when Paulson scored following a pass from Lichte to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. It remained 1-0 until the 34th minute when Lichte found the back of the cage on an assist from Carly Anson, giving the Knights a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
The second half saw the Mavericks get off to a good start as Williams scored in the 43rd minute after Znaniecki's first shot was saved by Gregory, making it 2-1. Amell would make two more saves in the frame to keep the score at 2-1, but Mercy could not find the game-tying goal and the Knights came out with the victory.
Bellarmine held a 15-4 edge in shots and a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 27th when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas at 4 p.m.
