Box Score SPARKILL, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2017) – Despite a goal from junior Breanna Morrow (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) and six saves from junior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Mavericks (2-8) have dropped four games in a row, while the Spartans (3-7) snap a four-game losing streak with the win.
Morrow recorded her first collegiate goal, while junior Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) contributed an assist. Pettit played the full 70 minutes in goal to take the loss.
St. Thomas Aquinas received two goals from Meghan McCarren and a goal from Arielle Rodriguez. Goalie Suzanne Clarke made seven saves to earn the win.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the 3rd minute of action with McCarren scoring her first goal of the day, off an assist from Jacqueline Dowling, to give St. Thomas Aquinas an early 1-0 lead. Mercy responded with a pair of shots on goal, but both were stopped by Clarke to keep the score at 1-0.
The score remained 1-0 at halftime with Pettit making two saves and Clarke stopping four shots in the frame.
The second stanza saw the Spartans look to add onto their lead, but Pettit began the second half with four saves to keep it a 1-0 game. St. Thomas Aquinas finally added onto their lead in the 58th minute when Rodriguez scored off a rebound to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans increased their lead to 3-0 in the 64th minute when McCarren scored again, off an assist from Jade Hall. Morrow got the Mavericks on the board in the 67th minute when Williams fed her a pass to make it 3-1. Time would run out on Mercy with St. Thomas Aquinas coming away with the victory.
The Spartans held a 12-9 edge in shots and penalty corners were tied at 7-7.
