Williams Scores Game-Winning Goal in Overtime and Pettit Makes Nine Saves as Field Hockey Earns 3-2 Win Over STAC

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 10, 2018) – Powered by the game-winning goal in overtime from senior Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and nine saves from senior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 3-2 win over St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (2-8) snap a five-game losing streak with the win, while the Spartans (3-11) have dropped four games in a row.

Williams scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year and senior Angela Robbins (Margate, N.J./Mainland Regional) added a goal and an assist. Junior Sabrina Anderson (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester JR/SR) also scored and junior Haley Jandris (Winchendon, Mass./Murdock) contributed a defensive save. Senior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) started the first half in goal and made two saves. Pettit played the second half and overtime with nine saves to earn the win.

St. Thomas Aquinas received goals from Arielle Rodriguez and Briannah Thorne and Suzanne Clarke made nine saves to take the loss.

Mercy jumped on the board early when Anderson fired a shot from just inside the circle that went off a Spartan defender and into the goal to put the Mavericks up 1-0 in the 6th minute of action.

The score remained 1-0 until the 26th minute when Rodriguez deflected the ball into the goal after a Kaylee Pistner shot to make it 1-1.

The Spartans wasted little time in taking the lead when Thorne scored off a penalty corner taken by Lotte Strijbos less than two minutes later to make it 2-1. The score remained 2-1 heading into halftime with the Spartans holding an 8-3 edge in shots.

Pettit made several key saves in the second half to keep the Mavericks in the game and Robbins would tie the game up at 2-2 in the 38th minute with her second goal of the season. Mercy continued to apply pressure to the St. Thomas Aquinas defense but Clarke made six saves in the second half to keep the game tied. Pettit also did her part with seven saves in the second half to keep the game tied at 2-2 after regulation.

Pettit made two more saves in the overtime period and Clarke added one of her own, but Williams would score the game-winning goal with less than 30 seconds left in the first overtime, off an assist from Robbins, to give Mercy the 3-2 win.

St. Thomas Aquinas held a 19-14 edge in shots and an 11-7 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Morgan Lizotte and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, October 12th when they host Newberry at 3 p.m.
