DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2018) – Powered by the game-winning goal in overtime from senior Angela Robbins (Margate, N.J./Mainland Regional), off an assist from senior Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 1-0 Senior Day victory over Bellarmine University on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, Robbins, Micaela Belz (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel), Williams, Kayly Bryan (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point), Marissa Spinazzola (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue), Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) and Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) were recognized by the athletic department for their contributions as members of the Mercy College field hockey team.
The Mavericks (3-9) have won two of their last three games, while the Knights (5-7) have dropped six games in a row.
Robbins scored the game-winning goal just 36 seconds into the first overtime and now has three goals on the year. Williams recorded her second assist of the year and sophomore Kellie Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) added a defensive save. Amell played the first half in goal and made five saves before giving way to Pettit who played the second half and made three saves to earn the win.
Merit Harris had a game-high six shots on goal for Bellarmine and Heather Gregory made seven saves to take the loss.
The Knights recorded the first shot on goal of the game in the 9th minute of action, but Amell made a stop on a Harris shot to keep the game scoreless. Mercy came back with their first scoring chances in the 24th minute, but a defensive save on a Bryan shot by Sara Wilder and two saves by Gregory kept the Mavericks off the board.
Robbins forced Storm Thompson to make a defensive save in the 25th minute to maintain a scoreless contest. Amell made two more stops in the 30th minute, including one on a Harris penalty stroke to keep the game knotted at 0-0. Amell made two more saves in the frame and Znaniecki produced a defensive save to send the teams into halftime scoreless.
The Mavericks forced Gregory to make another save in the 40th and Pettit came up with two key stops in the 47th minute to continue the scoring drought for both teams. Pettit recorded her biggest save in the 61st minute when she stopped a Harris penalty stroke.
Gregory made two more saves in the half, but a stop on a Bryan penalty stroke with 59 seconds left would be her biggest to send the game into overtime.
Mercy wasted little time in the overtime period as Spinazzola sent a ball in and Williams crossed it over from right to left into the center where Robbins fired it into the cage to give the Mavericks the win just 36 seconds into the extra period.
Mercy held a 13-12 edge in shots and penalty corners were tied at 13-13.
Head Coach Morgan Lizotte and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 17th when they play at Molloy at 4 p.m.
