Williams Scores Game-High Two Goals as Field Hockey Earns 3-1 Win Over Molloy

SEAFORD, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2018) – Powered by a game-high two goals from senior Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over Molloy College on Wednesday afternoon at Cedar Creek Park.

The Mavericks (4-9) have won two games in a row, while the Lions (9-5) see their five-game win streak snapped.

Williams now has a team-high six goals on the year and junior Sabrina Anderson (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester JR/SR) also scored. Senior Angela Robbins (Margate, N.J./Mainland Regional) dished out an assist and senior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made five saves to earn the win.

Molloy received a goal from Nadia Elcock and Tara Byrnes made four saves to take the loss.

Amell made an early save in the 6th minute of action, but that was the only shot on goal for both teams up until the 28th minute when Williams scored to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. The senior tapped the ball into the right corner off a shot from Robbins to give the Mavericks the lead. The score remained 1-0 in favor of Mercy heading into halftime, despite Molloy holding an 8-5 edge in shots.

After a Williams shot was stopped by Byrnes in the 42nd, the senior followed up on the rebound and finished off her second goal of the game to put the Mavericks up 2-0.

Amell would make four saves until Elcock got the Lions on the board in the 58th minute to make it 2-1. Mercy put the game away in the 61st minute when Anderson scored off a rebound of a Robbins shot that was stopped by Byrnes to increase the Mavericks advantage to 3-1.

Mercy held the lead the rest of the way and did not surrender another shot on goal to secure the win.

Molloy held a 17-15 edge in shots and a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.

Head Coach Morgan Lizotte and the Mavericks resume action on Monday, October 22nd when they host Lindenwood at 1 p.m.
