DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2018) – Despite a goal from senior Angela Robbins (Margate, N.J./Mainland Regional) and five saves apiece from freshman Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and senior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer), the Mercy College field hockey team suffered a 4-1 setback to No. 10 Lindenwood University on Monday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-10) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Lions (10-3) reach double digits in wins.
Robbins tallied her fourth goal of the year and sophomore Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had a game-high five shots on goal. Viscione played the first half in goal to take the loss and Pettit played the second half.
Pauline Terwindt scored twice for Lindenwood and Bridget Hoogendijk and Caro Theunisz also scored. Skylar Starbeck made two saves in the first 28:36 to earn the win. Mackenzie Litterst played the final 41:24 with seven saves.
The teams traded shots on goal in the 4th and 5th minutes of action, but both goalkeepers made saves to keep the game scoreless. Starbeck made another save in the 16th minute on an Anthony shot to maintain a 0-0 tie.
Viscione made another save in the 18th minute, but a foul on Mercy would lead to Terwindt scoring on a penalty stroke to make it 1-0. Viscione made three more saves before Hoogendijk would strike in the 31st minute to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
A save from Litterst and a defensive save from Savannah Motley kept the Mavericks off the board, but Robbins would give Mercy their goal in the 32nd minute, following an Anthony corner, to make it 2-1. The Lions tacked on another goal in the 34th minute to head into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
The Mavericks would force Litterst to make six saves in the second half, including one on a penalty stroke, but were unable to score again. Lindenwood scored their final goal of the game in the 53rd minute when Theunisz scored off a high shot from just inside circle.
Shots were tied at 17-17 and Mercy held a 13-9 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Morgan Lizotte and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, October 25th when they play at Millersville at 6 p.m.
