DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2018) – Despite a season-high two goals from senior Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-8) have dropped five games in a row, while the Chargers (1-6) pick up their first win in program history.
Williams now has a team-high three goals on the year and senior Angela Robbins (Margate, N.J./Mainland Regional) had four shots on goal. Senior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) played the first half in goal and made four saves. Senior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) was in goal in the second half and made two saves to take the loss.
New Haven received goals from Reilly Bialko, Alexis Rider and Taylor Geaglone. Natalie Shaker made 14 saves to earn the win.
The Mavericks forced Shaker to make three saves in the first seven minutes action, but the Chargers would get on the board first in the 10th minute of action. Bialko scored on a penalty stroke after a Mercy foul to make it 1-0.
Mercy continued to apply pressure to the New Haven backline, but Shaker would make nine saves in the half to keep the Mavericks off the board early on. The Chargers increased their lead to 2-0 when Rider scored on a shot just inside the circle after a Mercy foul in the 25th minute.
Williams responded with the Mavericks first goal of the day just over a minute later on a shot just inside the circle to make it 2-1. Pettit made three saves to keep the score 2-1 and Williams tied the score up at 2-2 in the 31st minute on a shot from in front. Shaker made two more saves to close out the half, sending the teams into halftime tied at 2-2.
The score remained tied at 2-2 heading into the final five minutes of the game and overtime looked like a possibility. However, Geaglone would secure the win for the Chargers in the 66th minute when she fired the ball into the cage from out in front to put New Haven ahead 3-2. The Chargers would hold off the Mavericks to come away with the program's first-ever win.
Mercy held a 19-11 edge in shots and New Haven maintained an 11-9 advantage in penalty corners.
