FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 20, 2018) – Powered by a double-double from senior Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) and 13 kills from sophomore Leilani Vazquez (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Adelphi University), the Mercy College volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-10) victory over ECC foe Queens College on Saturday afternoon to secure their most ECC wins in a season since 2005.
The Mavericks (10-14, 5-5 ECC) have their first double-digit win total since 2013 and sweep the season series with the Knights (1-20, 0-10 ECC) for the first time since 2005. Mercy currently sits a half game behind LIU Post for the fourth and final ECC Tournament spot.
Runge had 25 assists and 11 digs with four kills. Vazquez hit .565 and sophomore Natalia Garcia (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Turabo University) had 11 digs. Senior Neysha Gonzalez (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico/Monroe College) had ten digs and freshman Loreto Nunez Casal (Pontevedra, Spain/Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) had nine kills.
Queens was led by Leeks Hollis who had four kills.
Mercy jumped out to a 4-0 lead in set one and built an 8-3 lead after two Melissa Lamson-Lindsey (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y./Cheyney University) service aces, forcing a Queens timeout. Following the timeout, Mercy ended the set on a 17-4 run to take the first set, 25-7.
The Knights scored the first point of the second set, but the Mavericks would respond with an 11-3 run, capped off by Nunez Casal kill, to make it 11-4. Queens made it 12-6, but Mercy would close out the set on a 13-5 run, finished off by a Jessica Berka (Hicksville, N.Y./St. Dominic) ace, to take a 2-0 lead.
Mercy scored the first four points of set three and held a 6-1 lead before Queens made it 10-6. However, that would be as close as they could get as the Mavericks finished off the set on a 15-4 run to secure the match in straight sets.
Mercy hit .397 with 36 kills and 53 digs and Queens hit -.056 with 14 kills and 33 digs.
Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 24th when they host Goldey-Beacom at 6 p.m.
