Pettit Makes Five Saves as Field Hockey Plays at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. (Oct. 28, 2018) – Despite five saves from senior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to Newberry College on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks (4-12) have dropped three games in a row, while the Wolves (6-8) snap a three-game losing streak with the win.

Pettit made five saves in the second half and senior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made two saves in the first half to take the loss. Sophomore Kellie Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) made a defensive save and sophomore Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had a team-high two shots on goal.

Newberry was led by Farai Kawonde and Brady Keeler who scored and Allison Davis made three saves to earn the win.

The Wolves wasted little time in getting on the board as Kawonde scored in the 6th minute after backhanding the ball into the cage following a scrum inside to make it 1-0.

Mercy responded with four shots on goal in the 17th and 18th minutes, but Davis made three saves and Amber Singer made a defensive save to keep the score at 1-0. Amell made two saves later in the first half to keep the score 1-0 heading into halftime.

Pettit made two saves to open the second half and Znaniecki made a defensive save before Keeler scored on a fastbreak in the 42nd minute to bring the score to 2-0. Mercy would be unable to score and Newberry came away with the win.

Newberry held a 14-8 edge in shots and an 8-5 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Morgan Lizotte and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, November 1st when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 2 p.m. in an ECC Championship Semifinal game.
