Anthony and Smith Score to Lead No. 2 Field Hockey to ECC Championship Game With 2-0 Win Over No. 3 STAC

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2018) – Powered by goals from sophomore Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and freshman Briannagh Smith (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place), the No. 2 seeded Mercy College field hockey team advanced to the ECC Championship Game with a 2-0 victory over No. 3 seeded St. Thomas Aquinas College on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-12) will now play against No. 1 seed Molloy on Friday, November 2nd at 1 p.m. at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford, New York in the Championship Game. The Spartans (4-14) end their season with three straight losses.

Anthony and Smith both recorded their first collegiate goals and senior Angela Robbins (Margate, N.J./Mainland Regional) dished out an assist. Senior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) played the first half in goal and made three saves to earn the win. Senior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) made four saves in the second half to help secure the win.

St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Jacqueline Dowling and Alexandra Vippolis who both had a team-high two shots on goal. Taylor Hickey recorded a defensive save and Suzanne Clarke made five saves to take the loss.

The teams traded shots on goal in the 7th and 9th minutes, but bother goalkeepers made saves to keep the game scoreless. Anthony would get the Mavericks on the board in the 12th minute when she deflected a Robbins shot into the goal after a corner taken by Anthony to make it 1-0.

Clarke made three more saves in the half and Hickey stopped another shot to keep it a 1-0 game. Amell stopped two shots in the final minute of action to send the teams into halftime with Mercy up 1-0.

Pettit made an early stop in the 37th minute, but neither team would record a shot on goal until the 66th minute when Pettit made two huge saves with the Spartans right in front of the goal to keep it 1-0.

The Mavericks would add on another goal with less than a minute to play when Smith scored off a rebound of an Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) shot that was stopped by Clarke to make it 2-0. Mercy would hold on for the win and secure a spot in the Championship Game.

Mercy held an 11-10 edge in shots and 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Head Coach Morgan Lizotte and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Cedar Creek Park at 1 p.m. against No. 1 seed Molloy College for the ECC Championship.
