MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 22, 2018) – Despite an RBI single from junior Josue Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Stonehill College on Thursday night in Myrtle Beach.
The Mavericks (3-2) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Skyhawks (1-0) open their season with a win.
Perez went 1-for-3 and junior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) went 1-for-4. Junior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) recorded an RBI and freshman Jack Kelly (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) made the start on the mound and went the first six innings with two earned runs allowed to take the loss.
Stonehill was led by Harrison Sabo who went 1-for-4 with two RBI and Alex Hurley went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Michael Young earned the win on the mound after going six innings with one run allowed and ten strikeouts. Joe Klingensmith pitched 1 1/3 innings to earn the save.
The Skyhawks would score all three of their runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Sabo recorded a triple that brought home two runs after a walk and single in the previous two at bats. Hurley later followed with an RBI that scored Sabo and put Stonehill up 3-0.
Mercy would get on the board in the bottom of the second. Garcia would walk and advance to second on a wild pitch before Perez singled him home to make it 3-1. The inning would end with a strikeout with runners on first and second base.
It remained 3-1 until the seventh inning when Garcia reached on an error by the Stonehill first baseman which allowed senior Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J./Saint Anselm College) to score from second. The score remained 3-2 as the Mavericks could not record a hit the rest of the way and the Skyhawks held on for the win.
Mercy resumes action tomorrow when they play Felician at 10 a.m. in Myrtle Beach.
