Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb 23, 2018) – Despite six different Mavericks recording a hit, the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 7-0 decision to Felician University on Friday morning in Myrtle Beach.
The Mavericks (3-3) drop their second straight game, while the Golden Falcons (1-5) pick up their first win of the season.
Sophomore John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) led Mercy at the plate going 2-for-4, while juniors Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), Josue Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College), Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College), Gerardo Reyes (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Brookdale CC) and Alonso Tenya (Lima, Peru/Westchester CC) also recorded a hit. Sophomore Diego Quinones (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) made the start on the bump and went 1 2/3 innings with one earned run allowed to take the loss.
Felician was led by Bruce Strickland who went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Rob Naughton tossed a complete game on the mound with ten strikeouts to earn the win.
The Golden Falcons opened the scoring in the first inning as Jason Polgano drove home Strickland following a Mercy error that put Felician up 1-0.
It remained 1-0 until the third inning when the Golden Falcons scored another run following a Mercy error to take a 2-0 advantage. Polgano made it 3-0 in the fourth inning with an RBI double. Strickland delivered the biggest blow of the game in the fifth inning when he smacked a two-run home run to put Felician up 5-0. The Golden Falcons tacked on another run in the inning to build a 6-0 lead and would score their final run in the bottom of the seventh.
Mercy loaded the bases in the seventh but a fly out to right field would end the threat. The Mavericks would not be able to get on the scoreboard and Felician came away with the win.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they take on Southern N.H. and Southern Connecticut State at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in Myrtle Beach.
