Murphy Records Two Hits and Kelly Tosses 6 1/3 Strong Innings as Baseball Hosts Bloomfield in Home Opener

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 1, 2018) – Despite two hits from junior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) and a strong outing on the mound from freshman Jack Kelly (Scranton, Pa./Scranton), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 4-0 decision to Bloomfield College in their home opener on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (3-7) drop their sixth straight game, while the Bears (3-0-1) remain unbeaten on the year.

Murphy went 2-for-4 and juniors Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) both went 1-for-4. Kelly went 6 1/3 innings with just two earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Bloomfield was led by Kendon Strachan who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Steven Acosta pitched a scoreless sixth inning to earn the win.

A pitcher's duel broke out early on as neither team would score until the top of the seventh. Mercy threatened with runners on second and third in the second inning, but a strikeout would end the inning to keep the score at 0-0.

Sadallah doubled in the fourth inning and stole third with two outs. However, a strikeout would end the threat and keep the two teams scoreless. The Bears finally got on the board in the seventh inning when Strachan tripled to right center, bringing in two runs to make it 2-0.

Mercy loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning, but a double play ended the threat and kept Bloomfield out in front 2-0. The Bears added on another run in the eighth and ninth innings to increase the lead to 4-0. Murphy singled in the eighth inning to put runners on first and second with one out, but two consecutive outs led to the end of the inning.

The Mavericks went down in order in the bottom of the ninth giving Bloomfield the victory.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, March 4th when they host New Haven for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
