Mooradian Homers as Baseball Hosts No. 23 New Haven

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 4, 2018) – Despite a home run and two RBI on the day from sophomore John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro), the Mercy College baseball team dropped 4-0 and 10-4 decisions to No. 23 University of New Haven on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (3-9) have dropped eight games in a row, while the Chargers (6-0) remain unbeaten this season.

Game 1: New Haven 4, Mercy 0

The opening game of the day saw neither team score until the top of the fifth when New Haven plated two runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Chargers received a two-run inside-the-park home run from Matt Chamberlain to break the scoreless tie.

New Haven added on a run in the top of the sixth when Joe Caico hit an inside-the-park home run that made it 3-0. The Chargers scored their final run in the seventh inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Mavericks could only record two hits in the game off New Haven starter David Palmer who went the distance to earn the win.

Juniors Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) recorded the lone Mercy hits and junior Kevin Tise (New York, N.Y./University of Hartford) tossed a complete game with four earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Chamberlain led New Haven at the plate with a 2-for-3 game one with two RBI.

Game 2: New Haven 10, Mercy 4

The nightcap saw the Chargers jump out to a 1-0 lead after an RBI double from Tom Walraven in the top of the first inning. However, Mercy responded right back with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game up at 1-1. Mooradian drove in Ortiz Sanchez on a fielder's choice to even up the game after one inning of play.

New Haven broke through with three runs in the top of the second to build a 4-1 advantage. PJ Contreras smacked a two-run double down the left field line and Billy Huber brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to give the Chargers a three-run lead.

It remained 4-1 until the top of the fourth when Walraven drove in another run with a single to center field to make it 5-1. New Haven produced three more runs in the top of the fifth to increase their advantage to 8-1.

The Mavericks continued to battle and produced two runs in the bottom of the sixth to get Mercy to within 8-3. Mooradian led off the inning with a home run to left center and junior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) followed with a triple to right center. Senior John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) brought home Garcia with a sacrifice fly to right field, but the Mavericks were unable to plate any more runs.

New Haven scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to bring the score to 10-3. The Mavericks answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning but could not get any closer as the Chargers held on for the win.

Mooradian went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI and junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Murphy went 2-for-4, Garcia went 1-for-2 with a run scored and Ortiz Sanchez went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
