DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 15, 2018) – Despite a two-run home run from junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 23-3 decision to Nyack College on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-13) have their two-game winning streak snapped, while the Warriors (7-6-1) move over .500 with the win.
Sadallah went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored and sophomore Scott Kelnhofer (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Senior Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J./Saint Anselm College), juniors Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) and Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) and freshman Zak Kain (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) also recorded hits. Sophomore Matteo Finocchi (Staatsburg, N.Y./FDR) made the start on the mound and went the first two innings with five earned runs allowed to take the loss. Senior Tyler Cinelli (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) tossed a scoreless ninth inning of relief.
Nyack was led by Isaak Bustamante who batted 3-for-4 with six RBI and two runs scored. Hakim Williams made the start on the bump and tossed a scoreless inning to earn the win.
The Warriors opened the contest with a run in the top of the first on a home run to left field that made it 1-0. The guests tacked on four runs in the second and six runs in the third to build an 11-0 advantage after three innings of play.
Nyack scored three more runs in the fourth to take a 14-0 lead. Sadallah got the Mavericks on the board in the bottom of the fifth with his first home run of the season that scored senior Ralph Pasols (Middletown, N.Y./Orange CC) to make it 14-2 after five innings.
The visitors held a 23-2 edge heading into the bottom of the eighth when Kelnhofer drove home freshman Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) with an RBI single to get the Mavericks within 23-3. However, the deficit proved too much to overcome and the Warriors held on for the victory.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 17th when they host Saint Michael's for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
