DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 17, 2018) – Powered by a home run and team-high six RBI on the day from junior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College), the Mercy College baseball team earned 17-2 and 4-3 victories over Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (7-13) have won two games in a row, while the Purple Knights (4-10) have dropped two games in a row.
Game 1: Mercy 17, Saint Michael's 2
The opening game of the day saw the Mavericks produce 17 runs and 18 hits in securing the game one victory. Mercy started the scoring in the bottom of the second when junior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) hit his fifth home run of the season to put the Mavericks up 1-0. Sophomore John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) made it 2-0 with an RBI single in the third inning.
The Purple Knights responded with two runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game up at 2-2. Mercy had a large answer in the bottom half of the inning, scoring 12 runs on 11 hits to build a 14-2 advantage. The Mavericks would score all 12 runs with two outs. Junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) started the scoring with an RBI double and Mooradian then followed with a two-RBI single to right field. Junior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) then scored Mooradian with a single. Garcia later brought home a pair of runs with a single and Ortiz Sanchez produced two runs with a ground-rule double. Sadallah doubled again in the inning to score two more runs and Mooradian drove in his third run of the inning to cap off the scoring.
After a scoreless top of the fifth, the Mavericks continued to swing the bats well producing three more runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 17-2 lead. Junior Josue Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) produced a bases-loaded walk and Ortiz Sanchez drove in another run on a single to make it 16-2. Sadallah drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning to finish off the scoring for Mercy.
Junior Kevin Tise (New York, N.Y./University of Hartford) went the first four innings with two earned runs allowed to earn the win and freshman Demetri Mesimeris (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and senior Tyler Cinelli (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) combined to toss three scoreless innings to finish off the win. Ortiz Sanchez went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Sadallah went 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs. Mooradian went 3-for-5 with four RBI and Garcia batted 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs. Perez batted 2-for-2 with an RBI and junior Gerardo Reyes (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Brookdale CC) batted 3-for-4 with two runs. Senior Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J./Saint Anselm College) batted 2-for-5 with two runs and Murphy went 1-for-5 with an RBI.
Saint Michael's was led by Dante Moran who went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a home run. Drew Farris went 3 2/3 innings with 11 earned runs allowed to take the loss.
Game 2: Mercy 4, Saint Michael's 3
Saint Michael's jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game two before Ortiz Sanchez put the Mavericks ahead for good with a three-run home run in the bottom of the second. Mercy added onto their lead in the bottom of the third with freshman Zak Kain (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) singling home Mooradian to put the Mavericks up 4-1.
The Purple Knights inched closer with a run in the fourth and fifth innings to bring the score to 4-3. Senior Juan Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Iowa Lakes CC) came in relief of starter Jack Kelly (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and retired two straight batters to end the threat, keeping the Mavericks out in front.
Saint Michael's loaded the bases again in the sixth inning, but once again Perez worked his way out of trouble to keep the Purple Knights off the board. Perez tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning to secure the save and give the Mavericks the doubleheader sweep.
Ortiz Sanchez went 2-for-2 with three RBI and Kain went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Josue Perez batted 2-for-3 with a run scored and Kelly went 4 1/3 innings with two earned runs allowed to earn his first collegiate win.
Saint Michael's was led by Trevor Allen who batted 2-for-4 with an RBI. Zach Rodgers went the distance with seven strikeouts to take the loss.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Saint Michael's at 12 p.m.
