DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 18, 2018) – Powered by a game-high-tying five RBI from junior Gerardo Reyes (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Brookdale CC), the Mercy College baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Saint Michael's College with a 12-11 victory on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (8-13) have won three games in a row, while the Purple Knights (4-11) have dropped three games in a row.
Reyes went 2-for-5 and senior Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J./Saint Anselm College) batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and sophomore John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) went 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) drove in two runs and junior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman Noah Krzyzak (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) made the start on the mound and went 4 1/3 innings with six earned runs allowed to pick up a no-decision. Junior Oscar Marcial (New York, N.Y./A. Philip Randolph) pitched two innings of relief to earn his second win of the year and freshman Anthony Amato (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) pitched the ninth inning to earn his first collegiate save.
Saint Michael's was led by Iset Maldonado who batted 3-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored. Paul Prue pitched four innings in relief of starter Alex Mendez to take his second loss of the year.
Mercy got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning with three runs to take a 3-0 lead. Reyes had the biggest blow of the inning with a double down the right field line that brought home three runs.
The Purple Knights answered right back with two runs in the top of the second to make it 3-2. Maldonado brought home both runs with a double to right center. The Mavericks came back with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-2 lead. Carpenter brought home a pair with an RBI single to center field and Murphy drove in Ortiz Sanchez with a sacrifice fly.
Saint Michael's inched closer with three runs in the top of the fourth to bring the score to 6-5. Mercy increased the lead back to four, 9-5, with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Reyes doubled home two runs and Murphy brought in a run on a fielder's choice.
The Purple Knights would not go away and scored two runs in the fifth, one run in the sixth and one run in the seventh to tie the game up at 9-9. However, the Mavericks regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh with three runs to build a 12-9 lead. Ortiz Sanchez started the scoring with an RBI single up the middle and Mooradian came up with a two-run triple to right center that scored two more runs.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Saint Michael's scored two more runs in the top of the ninth to make it 12-11, but a baserunner would be thrown out at second to end the game.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, March 22nd when they host Adelphi at 3 p.m.
