Game Preview: Baseball Plays at Virginia State on Friday and Saturday

ETTRICK, Va. (Mar. 8, 2018) – The Mercy College baseball team resumes action on Friday, March 9th at Virginia State University for a single game at 5 p.m. The Mavericks conclude the three-game set with a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy takes on Virginia State for a three-game set after dropping a 10-4 decision to Adelphi on Tuesday. The Mavericks have been led by at the dish by junior Anthony Murphy who is batting a team-best .340 with an ECC-high 15 RBI. The outfielder also has a team-high 16 hits, five doubles and .574 slugging percentage in 47 at bats. Also contributing on offense is sophomore John Mooradian who is hitting .319 with a team-high 11 runs scored and is tied for first in the ECC in stolen bases with junior Joseph Sadallah with ten on the year. Junior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez is batting .289 with eight runs scored and four RBI in his first season as a Maverick. The pitching staff is led by freshman Jack Kelly and junior Kevin Tise. Kelly has posted a 2.55 ERA in 17 2/3 innings with 12 strikeouts in three starts. Tise has tossed 17.0 innings and has struck out ten batters with one complete game. The bullpen is led by junior Oscar Marcial who has recorded a 2.16 ERA with eight strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings.

Scouting the Trojans

Virginia State has opened the season 10-4-1 and is coming off a sweep of The University of Virginia's College at Wise on Sunday. The Trojans won 20 games last season and dropped two out of three games to the Mavericks last season. Virginia State is led at the plate by Aaron Harris who is batting .512 with 15 RBI and 21 hits. Also seeing success at the dish is Jahleel Sewer who is batting .421 with 14 RBI and three home runs. Leading the pitchers is Joshua Welcher who has posted a 3-1 record with a 5.26 ERA and one save in nine appearances. Gerard Taylor is 4-0 in five appearances and currently has a 6.20 ERA.
