DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2018) – Powered by the game-winning run in the 13th inning by junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), the Mercy College baseball team earned a 2-1 win over ECC foe Queens College on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (15-18, 4-5 ECC) have won three games in a row and are off to their best ECC start since 2014. Mercy also has their most wins in a season since 2011, while the Knights (9-19, 1-12 ECC) have dropped nine games in a row.
Sadallah went 1-for-4 with a run and two stolen bases and junior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) went 1-for-4 with a run and juniors Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and Josue Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and sophomore Scott Kelnhofer (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) all recorded a hit. Junior Kevin Tise (New York, N.Y./University of Hartford) pitched the first seven innings with no runs allowed and eight strikeouts to earn a no-decision. Sophomore Andrew Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. John's University) allowed an unearned in the ninth inning before giving way to senior Juan Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Iowa Lakes CC) and junior Oscar Marcial (New York, N.Y./A. Philip Randolph) who combined to toss five scoreless innings. Marcial pitched the final three innings to earn his team-high third win of the year.
Queens was led by Louis Antos who went 2-for-4 and James McGee pitched the final 3.1 innings with no earned runs allowed to take the loss. Michael Lamneck pitched eight scoreless innings to take the no-decision.
The Mavericks first threatened in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with three walks and no outs. A failed attempt at a squeeze would lead to the first out on a caught stealing at home and back-to-back strikeouts would end the inning, keeping the score at 0-0.
The Knights put runners on second and third in the fifth inning, but Tise kept Queens off the board with a fly out to left field. Mercy would put runners on in the sixth and eighth innings but were unable to score and Queens could not cash in on their opportunities as well.
The game stayed scoreless until the top of the ninth when the Knights scored an unearned run on a bases-loaded walk that made it 1-0. Mercy immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning with Mooradian leading off the inning with a single to right center. Murphy would bring him home on a double down the left field line that made it 1-1. The Mavericks were unable to score again, sending the game into extra innings.
Mercy loaded the bases again in the tenth inning, but a strikeout would end the inning to keep the score at 1-1. Queens put runners on first and second in the 12th inning, but Marcial was able to induce a fly out to keep the game tied. Mercy went down in order in their half of the 12th and the Knights went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 13th, leading to the Mavericks bottom of the 13th.
Sadallah led off the 13th with a single to center field. He stole second with Mooradian at the plate. Mooradian grounded out to third with Sadallah trying to advance to third on the throw by the third baseman. The Queens first baseman attempted to throw Sadallah out at third after getting the out at first, but his throw would go high and Sadallah was able to score to give Mercy the walk-off win.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Queens for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
