Murphy Hits Grand Slam in Game One as Baseball Splits at Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 14, 2018) – Led by a grand slam in game one from junior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College baseball team earned a 12-3 victory in game one against ECC foe Queens College before falling 4-0 in the nightcap on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (16-19, 5-6 ECC) have a four-game winning streak snapped in game two, while the Knights (10-20, 2-13 ECC) snap a ten-game losing streak with the game two win.

Game 1: Mercy 12, Queens 3

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when the Mavericks plated a run to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) walked and was moved to third on a single by junior Gerardo Reyes (Bayamon, P.R./Brookdale CC). Sophomore Scott Kelnhofer (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) then hit a single to center field that brought home Ortiz Sanchez to give Mercy the lead.

It stayed 1-0 until the top of the seventh when Kelnhofer singled to lead off the inning and later came around to score on an error by the Queens third baseman, making it 2-0. Queens came back and tied the score up at 2-2 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Mercy took the lead for good in the eighth inning with five runs on five hits to build a 7-2 lead. Reyes started the scoring with a sacrifice fly to score Ortiz Sanchez who doubled to lead off the inning. Sophomore John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) brought home two more runs with a single to left field and senior Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J./Saint Anselm College) finished off the scoring in the inning with a two-run double to left field.

After a scoreless bottom of the eighth, the Mavericks scored five more runs in the ninth inning to take a 12-2 lead. Mooradian drove in the first run on a fielder's choice and Murphy capped off the game with a grand slam to right field that put the game away for Mercy.

Queens scored a run in the bottom of the inning on a home run but could not get any more runs off freshman Anthony Amato (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) to give Mercy the game one win.

Murphy went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI and Carpenter went 1-for-5 with two RBI. Mooradian went 1-for-6 with three RBI and Kelnhofer went 4-for-5 with two runs. Reyes went 1-for-3 with an RBI and junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) went 2-for-4. Freshman Jack Kelly (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) pitched 6.1 innings with two runs allowed to pick up the win.

Eric Roubal went 1-for-2 with a home run for Queens and Dylan Hughes went 7.1 innings with two earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Game 2: Queens 4, Mercy 0

The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on two hits. Kevin Kolesar scored the first run on a wild pitch and Sam Siegel singled home a run to make it 2-0 and Louis Antos also scored in the inning to give Queens an early lead.

The Mavericks would only be able to produce four hits in the nightcap and could not get on the scoreboard. The Knights added on another run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-0. Mercy would put runners on third in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but could not score, giving Queens the game two win.

Junior Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 2-for-3 for Mercy and freshman Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) and Kelnhofer also recorded a hit. Freshman Noah Krzyzak (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) pitched the first 4.2 innings with three earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Siegel went 2-for-3 for Queens and Dennis Buckstein pitched the first five innings with ten strikeouts to earn the win.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Queens at 12 p.m.
