DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 20, 2018) – Despite a team-high two RBI and four hits from junior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 14-5 decision to ECC foe LIU Post on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (17-20, 6-7 ECC) have dropped two of their last three games, while the Pioneers (23-12, 11-2 ECC) have won four games in a row.
Garcia went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and senior Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J./Saint Anselm College) went 1-for-5 with an RBI. Junior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) went 1-for-5 with an RBI and sophomore John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) went 2-for-5. Freshman Noah Krzyzak (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) pitched the first 4.1 innings with three earned runs allowed to take the loss. Sophomore Matteo Finocchi (Staatsburg, N.Y./FDR) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
LIU Post was led by Anthony Vaglica who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run. James Varela tossed the first six innings with three runs allowed to pick up the win and Mike Lazos pitched the final three innings to earn the save.
After a scoreless top of the first, Mercy jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after an RBI double from junior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) and an RBI single from Garcia. The Pioneers responded with two runs in the top of the second to tie the game up at 2-2.
LIU Post took their first lead of the game in the top of the third when Joe Spitaleri singled up the middle to bring home Ramger Iglesias, making it 3-2. The Pioneers tacked on a run in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 5-2 lead.
The visitors made it 8-2 after three runs in the top of the sixth before Mercy responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 8-3. Carpenter brought home Garcia after Garcia had tripled in the previous at bat.
LIU Post increased the lead to 9-3 after a run in the seventh and the Mavericks came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to bring the score to 9-5. Ortiz Sanchez hit an RBI triple to right center and Garcia singled through the left side to get Mercy back in striking distance.
The Pioneers put the game away with five runs in the top of the eighth to build a 14-5 lead they would not relinquish.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at LIU Post at 12 p.m.
