BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 21, 2018) – Led by a team-high five hits and two RBI on the day from junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision in game one in 12 innings before earning a 4-2 win in game two at ECC foe LIU Post on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (18-21, 7-8 ECC) now have their most wins in a season since 2010, while the Pioneers (24-13, 12-3 ECC) have a five-game winning streak snapped with the game two loss.
Game 1: LIU Post 4, Mercy 3 – 12 Innings
The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning when junior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) singled home Sadallah. The Pioneers got the run back in the fourth inning when Jimmy Mendyk doubled to right center to bring in a run and make it 1-1.
Mercy retook the lead in the fifth inning when junior Gerardo Reyes (Bayamon, P.R./Brookdale CC) brought home Sadallah on a bunt single to the pitcher that made it 2-1. The Pioneers tied the game up in the sixth inning and took the lead in the seventh inning on a Dave Brehm single to center field, bringing the score to 3-2.
The Mavericks tied the game up at 3-3 in the eighth inning when freshman Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) doubled down the right field line to bring home Reyes. Neither team could score in the ninth inning, sending the game into extra innings.
LIU Post would win the game on an error in the bottom of the 12th inning, taking game one 4-3.
Ortiz Sanchez went 3-for-6 with an RBI and Jocelyn went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Reyes went 1-for-2 with an RBI and sophomore John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) went 3-for-6. Freshman Jack Kelly (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) pitched seven inning with two earned runs allowed to earn the no-decision. Sophomore Andrew Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. John's University) pitched three scoreless innings of relief and senior Juan Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Iowa Lakes CC) pitched 1.1 innings to take the loss.
Mendyk went 3-for-5 with an RBI for LIU Post and Mike Stiles earned the win after pitching five innings in relief.
Game 2: Mercy 4, LIU Post 2
The Mavericks scored all four of their runs in the second inning on three hits and an LIU Post error. Junior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and Jocelyn scored the first runs of the inning after junior Josue Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) reached on an error by the center fielder. Sadallah brought home the final two runs of the inning on a single to center field to make it 4-0.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the sixth inning but that was all they could get off junior Kevin Tise (New York, N.Y./University of Hartford) who pitched a complete game to pick up his third win of the year.
Sadallah went 4-for-4 with two RBI and Ortiz Sanchez, sophomore Scott Kelnhofer (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) and junior Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) all recorded a hit.
Brehm went 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Pioneers and Joseph Valentino went 2.0 innings to take the loss.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host LIU Post at 12 p.m.
