Sadallah Records Game-High Two RBI as Baseball Hosts No. 22 St. Thomas Aquinas

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 29, 2018) – Despite a game-high two RBI from junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision in ten innings to ECC foe No. 22 St. Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (20-25, 9-11 ECC) have now dropped four of their last games, while the Spartans (32-10, 17-3 ECC) secure the season series with the win.

Sadallah went 1-for-5 and sophomore Scott Kelnhofer (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 1-for-3 with two runs and junior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) went 1-for-4. Freshman Jack Kelly (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) made the start on the mound and went 7.1 innings with two runs allowed and seven strikeouts to earn the no-decision. Sophomore Matteo Finocchi (Staatsburg, N.Y./FDR) pitched 1.1 innings to take the loss.

St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Anthony Shkrelja who went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Angelo Baez pitched 2.0 innings in relief to earn the win and Chris Pennell recorded the final two outs to pick up the save.

The contest remained scoreless until the fifth inning when the Mavericks got on the board on a Kelnhofer RBI single to right center that scored Hagerty to make it 1-0.

It stayed 1-0 until the eighth inning when the Spartans plated three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Mercy came back in the bottom of the ninth with two runs coming on two outs to tie the game up at 3-3. Hagerty started the rally with a single and freshman Zak Kain (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) singled to put runners on first and second. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third before Kelnhofer loaded the bases with a walk. Sadallah delivered a two-run single to center field that tied the game up. A line out to right ended the threat sending the game into extra innings.

After a leadoff walk to begin the tenth inning, Shkrelja doubled to left field and a fielding error by the left fielder allowed the runner on first to score the go-ahead run. The Spartans were unable to plate any more runs sending the Mavericks to the plate down just one run.

Mercy would load the bases in the bottom of the inning but a fielder's choice to shortstop would end the game, giving St. Thomas Aquinas the win.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, May 2nd when they host Adelphi at 3 p.m.
