DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 6, 2018) – Despite a team-high two RBI from junior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) and freshman Zak Kain (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 9-6 decision to ECC foe Molloy College on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (12-15, 3-2 ECC) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Lions (15-13, 8-0 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play.
Murphy went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and Kain went 1-for-5 with two RBI. Junior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and senior Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J./Saint Anselm College) batted 1-for-4 with a run and RBI. Junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) went 2-for-3 with two runs and junior Kevin Tise (New York, N.Y./University of Hartford) went the first seven innings with four runs allowed and five strikeouts to earn a no-decision. Sophomore Matteo Finocchi (Staatsburg, N.Y./FDR) pitched 0.1 innings with three runs allowed to take the loss. Freshman Anthony Amato (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings with one strikeout.
Molloy was led by Angelo Navetta who went 2-for-5 with a game-high three RBI. Anthony Catinella made the start on the mound and went the first four innings with four runs allowed to earn the no-decision. Lucas Burton pitched an inning of relief to earn the win and Shawn Klotsche pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the save.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the third when the Lions broke through with a run on one hit and two Mercy errors, using a sacrifice fly in the inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning with Murphy recording an RBI double that scored Sadallah and Garcia later brought home Murphy with a single to make it 2-1 after three innings.
Molloy evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth when Navetta singled home a run to even up the score. Mercy once again followed with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead after Murphy and Carpenter produced RBI singles in the inning.
The Lions tied the game up again in the top of the seventh with two runs on four hits to bring the score to 4-4. The Mavericks retook the lead in the bottom of the inning with Kain singling home Carpenter and Murphy to put Mercy up 6-4 after seven innings.
Molloy took the lead for good with five runs in the top of the eighth on four hits to build a 9-6 advantage and held on for the victory.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow with a doubleheader at Molloy at 12 p.m.
