Amell Makes Six Saves and Podskoch Records Two Defensive Saves as Field Hockey Hosts No. 8 Kutztown

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Aug. 31, 2018) – Despite six saves from senior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) and two defensive saves from junior Rebecca Podskoch (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 8 Kutztown University in their season opener on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (0-1) drop their season opener in Head Coach Morgan Lizotte's debut, while the Golden Bears (1-0) open their season with a win.

Amell made six saves in the first half and senior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) made three saves in the second half. Freshman Briannagh Smith (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) added a defensive save and junior Sabrina Anderson (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester JR/SR) recorded the Mavericks lone shot.

Kutztown was led by Kyra Wozniak who had two goals and Rose Moore also scored. Katie Dotterweich played the first 58:15 in goal to earn the win.

The game remained scoreless early on with Amell making five early saves and Podskoch making two defensive saves. Kutztown finally got on the board in the 30th minute when Wozniak found the back of the cage on a shot in the lower left to make it 1-0, heading into halftime.

The second half saw the Golden Bears score in the 38th minute on a Rose Moore goal that made it 2-0. Just under five minutes later Wozniak struck again on a shot over Pettit and into the upper right that made it 3-0.

Kutztown held on the rest of the way as the Mavericks could only record one shot on the day.

The Golden Bears held a 23-1 edge in shots and a 16-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Head Coach Morgan Lizotte and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 5th when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas at 4 p.m.
