SPARKILL, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2018) – Despite a goal from senior Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) in the 18th minute, the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Mavericks (0-2) have dropped two games in a row, while the Spartans (2-2) improve to .500 on the year.
Williams recorded her first goal of the season and senior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made five saves in the cage for Mercy.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Briannah Thorne who had a goal and an assist and Kaylee Pistner also scored. Suzanne Clarke made four saves to earn the win.
Mercy came out firing, recording the game's first two shots on goal with Clarke making two saves. However, the Spartans broke through with the game's first goal in the 7th minute when Thorne found the back of the cage to make it 1-0.
Amell made her first save of the day in the 12th minute to keep the game 1-0. Williams would even the score up at 1-1 in the 18th minute following an Angela Robbins (Margate, N.J./Mainland Regional) penalty corner. The teams headed into halftime tied at 1-1 with Mercy holding a 5-3 edge in shots.
The second half saw Amell make two early saves, including a penalty stroke save on a Thorne shot that kept the score tied at 1-1. Neither team would be able to score in the second half leading to overtime.
Amell made a stop early in the first overtime period, but the Spartans ended the game in the 79th minute when Thorne fed a pass to Pistner who scored to give St. Thomas Aquinas the 2-1 overtime win.
St. Thomas Aquinas held a 10-8 edge in shots and an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners.
