DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2018) – Led by the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute from senior Kayly Bryan (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point), off an assist from senior Angela Robbins (Margate, N.J./Mainland Regional), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 2-1 victory over American International College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-3) give Head Coach Morgan Lizotte her first collegiate win, while the Yellow Jackets (0-4) remain winless on the year.
Bryan recorded her first goal of the season and Robbins also scored and had four shots on goal. Senior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) played the first half in goal with five saves before giving way to senior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) who made four saves in the second half to earn the win.
AIC was led by Jenny Holmquist who scored and Chelsea Davis who had two defensive saves. Goalkeeper Jessica Stone made seven saves to take the loss.
The Yellow Jackets came out as the early aggressors, recording multiple penalty corners and forcing Amell to make multiple saves. The senior made four saves before the Mavericks recorded their first shot on goal in the 23rd minute. Robbins, junior Samantha Lorenc (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) and senior Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) forced Stone to make four saves and Davis to make a defensive save in a less than five minute span, keeping the game scoreless in the 26th minute.
The Mavericks continued to apply pressure with junior Rebecca Podskoch (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and Robbins firing two more shots that needed to be stopped by Stone and Davis to keep the score at 0-0. Amell made one more save to close out the half, sending the two teams into halftime tied at 0-0.
AIC finally broke through in the 43rd minute of the second half to take a 1-0 lead when Holmquist scored following a Yellow Jacket penalty corner. Mercy responded by tying the game up at 1-1 in the 48th minute when Robbins turned an AIC turnover into a goal and shot the ball into the lower right to even up the score.
Mercy continued to control the action and took their first lead of the game in the 52nd minute when Robbins fed Bryan off a corner and Bryan fired the ball into the lower right corner of the cage to put the Mavericks up 2-1. Pettit made three more saves to keep the Yellow Jackets off the board, giving Mercy the win.
Shots were tied at 14-14 and the Yellow Jackets held a 13-11 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Morgan Lizotte and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, September 18th when they play at Adelphi at 4 p.m.
