ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Sept. 22, 2018) – Despite a goal from sophomore Kellie Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and an assist from senior Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 9 Lindenwood on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (1-6) have dropped three games in a row, while the Lions (4-1) have won four games in a row.
Znaniecki recorded her first goal of the season and Williams dished out her first assist of the year. Senior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) played the full 70 minutes in goal and made six saves in taking the loss.
Lindenwood received two goals and an assist from Bridget Hoogendijk and Jessie Londono also scored. Noor Fons and Savannah Motley dished out assists and Skylar Starbeck played the first 46:44 in goal with one save to earn the win.
Amell made three saves in the first 12 minutes of action to keep the Lions off the board. Lindenwood finally broke through in the 17th minute when Fons fired a shot that was deflected by Hoogendijk into the back of the cage to make it 1-0.
The Lions wasted little time in making it 2-0 when Hoogendijk scored following a pass from Motley after a penalty corner in the 19th minute of action. The Mavericks had a quick response of their own when Williams set up a Znaniecki for a goal in the 22nd minute that made it 2-1. The teams headed into halftime with Lindenwood up 2-1 after holding an 11-2 edge in shots.
The second half saw the Lions score their final goal in the 40th minute when Londono scored off a Hoogendijk penalty corner, increasing their lead to 3-1. Junior Catherine Brudi (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and Williams would record shots on goal, but that would not be enough as the Lions came away with the win.
Lindenwood held a 15-5 edge in shots and Mercy held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Head Coach Morgan Lizotte and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, September 27th when they host Molloy at 3 p.m.
