DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2018) – Despite two shots on goal from both seniors Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and Angela Robbins (Margate, N.J./Mainland Regional), the Mercy College field hockey team suffered a 2-0 setback to Molloy College on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-7) have dropped four games in a row, while the Lions (5-4) move over .500 on the year.
Senior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) played the first half in goal and made three saves and senior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) played the second half with two saves to take the loss.
Molloy was led by Zoe Norton who had a goal and an assist and Ellyn Byrnes also scored. Tara Byrnes made four saves to post a shutout.
The first half saw few scoring chances for both sides and both goalies came up with three saves to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
The score remained 0-0 until the 40th minute when Norton assisted on a goal from Ellyn Byrnes to give Molloy a 1-0 lead. Robbins looked to tie the game up in the 53rd minute, but Byrnes came out and made a diving stop to keep the Lions ahead.
Norton gave Molloy an insurance goal in the 56th minute when she scored on a penalty stroke after a Mercy foul. The Mavericks could not record a shot on goal the remainder of the game, giving the Lions a 2-0 win.
Molloy held a 9-5 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Head Coach Morgan Lizotte and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 2nd when they host New Haven at 3 p.m.
