RINDGE, N.H. (Oct. 12, 2019) – Despite a goal from freshman Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to Northeast-10 Conference foe Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon at Sodexo Field.
The Mavericks (3-6, 3-5 NE10) fail to build off their win on Wednesday, while the Ravens (5-7, 4-4 NE10) improve to .500 in NE10 play.
Sacco recorded her second goal of the year and junior Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) posted her first assist of the season. Sophomore Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) played 30 minutes in goal with three saves to take the loss. Sophomore Cydney Wolff (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) also played 30 minutes in goal and made two saves.
Franklin Pierce was led by Julianne Sacco who had a game-high three goals. Olivia Barnes made four saves in 56:32 minutes of action to earn the win.
Anthony recorded the game's first shot on goal in the 3rd minute, but it was the Ravens who scored first in the 5th minute. Feline van Doorn scored following an assist from Allison Collins to make it 1-0. Viscione made two saves before van Doorn scored again in the 11th minute to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Anthony and sophomore Briannagh Smith (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) forced Barnes to make a save in the 12th and 13th minutes of action. However, Sacco closed the scoring in the period with her first of the day to make it 3-0 after one quarter of play.
Wolff made two saves in the second quarter, but Franklin Pierce increased their lead to 4-0 when Sacco scored in the 18th minute. The score remained 4-0 heading into halftime.
Mercy opened the scoring in the third quarter when Sacco scored in the 37th minute following an assist from Anthony to make it 4-1. The Ravens concluded the scoring in the quarter when Sacco scored in the 45th minute to make it 5-1.
Neither team would score in the fourth quarter to give Franklin Pierce the victory.
Franklin Pierce held a 22-6 edge in shots and a 15-4 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Morgan O'Donohue and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 15th when they host Adelphi at 3 p.m.
