DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2019) – Despite a game-high 12 saves from sophomore Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 6 Adelphi University in a Northeast-10 Conference and Making Strides Versus Cancer matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-7, 3-6 NE10) have dropped two games in a row, while the Panthers (11-2, 9-1 NE10) have won nine games in a row.
Senior Sabrina Anderson (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester JR/SR) had a team-high two shots on goal and junior Nicole Cotton (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had a shot on goal. Viscione made 12 saves to take the loss.
Adelphi was led by Jackie Brown who had two goals and Danielle Kempf had an assist. Stephanie Peragallo made three saves to earn the win.
The opening quarter saw Viscione make three saves and Peragallo stopped two shots of her own to keep the game scoreless after one quarter.
The Panthers recorded the lone shot on goal of the second quarter, but Viscione came up with another save to send the teams into halftime scoreless.
Adelphi broke through with the game's first goal in the 32nd minute when Brown scored on a penalty stroke following a Mercy foul to make it 1-0. The score stayed 1-0 at the end of the third quarter with Viscione making two more stops in the frame.
It remained 1-0 until the 49th minute when Kempf sent a cross to in front of the net where Brown fired it home in the middle to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Viscione made six saves in the fourth quarter to keep the Mavericks in the game, but Adelphi would hold on for the win.
Adelphi held a 22-5 edge in shots and a 16-6 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Morgan O'Donohue and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, October 17th when they play at No. 7 Kutztown at 7 p.m.
