SPARKILL, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2019) – Despite a goal from freshman Katie Kreider (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), the Mercy College field hockey team suffered a 3-1 setback to Northeast-10 Conference foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (3-8, 3-7 NE10) have dropped three games in a row, while the Spartans (7-7, 5-5 NE10) improve to .500 in NE10 play.
Kreider recorded her second goal of the year and freshman Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) dished out her second assist of the season. Sophomore Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) made three saves to take the loss.
St. Thomas Aquinas received goals from Briannah Thorne, Lotte Strijbos and Lisa Larsson. Suzanne Clarke made two saves in 45 minutes of action to pick up the win.
The Spartans got on the board first in the 10th minute of action when Larsson scored following a Strijbos corner to make it 1-0. It remained 1-0 heading into the second quarter after both Viscione and Clarke made a save at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter saw Viscione make two saves and Clarke made one of her own, but the score stayed at 1-0 heading into halftime.
St. Thomas Aquinas made it 2-0 just 55 seconds into the third quarter when Strijbos scored off an assist from Kerry Conlon. Less than five minutes later the Spartans made it 3-0 when Thorne scored on a penalty stroke.
It stayed 3-0 heading into the 42nd minute when Kreider scored following a pass from Sacco to make it 3-1. The score stayed at 3-1 heading into the fourth quarter.
Neither team would score in the fourth quarter, giving St. Thomas Aquinas the 3-1 victory.
St. Thomas Aquinas held a 9-7 edge in shots and Mercy held an 8-2 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Morgan O'Donohue and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 23rd when they play at Saint Anselm at 7 p.m.
