Viscione Makes Game-High 11 Saves as Field Hockey Battles No. 5 Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. (Oct. 23, 2019) – Despite a game-high 11 saves from sophomore Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision to Northeast-10 Conference foe No. 5 Saint Anselm College on Wednesday night at Grappone Stadium.

The Mavericks (3-9, 3-8 NE10) have lost four games in a row, while the Hawks (13-2, 10-1 NE10) bounce back from their first NE10 loss.

Viscione made a game-high 11 saves to take the loss and senior Sabrina Anderson (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester Jr/Sr) had a shot on goal.

Saint Anselm was led by Hannah Friend who had a game-high three goals. Julia Hand made one save to earn the shutout win.

The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:16 into the game when Friend scored her first goal of the day. Viscione made two saves in the first quarter to keep the score 1-0 after one quarter of play.

Friend opened the scoring in the second quarter with her second of the game at the 17:52 mark to give Saint Anselm a 2-0 lead. Viscione stopped two more shots in the quarter to keep the Mavericks within striking distance at halftime, trailing just 2-0 against the No. 5 team in the country.

Viscione made four more saves in the third quarter to keep the score 2-0. Anderson recorded a pair of shots including a shot on goal that was stopped by Hand, but the Hawks headed into the fourth quarter with a 2-0 lead.

Saint Anselm made it 3-0 in the 49th minute when Friend scored again off an assist from Michelle Lemelin. The Hawks concluded the scoring in the 59th minute when Emilie Martin found the back of the cage following an assist from Maggie Malloy to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead they would not relinquish.

Saint Anselm held a 30-2 edge in shots and a 10-2 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Morgan O'Donohue and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 26th when they host Saint Michael's at 11 a.m.
