Sacco Scores as Field Hockey Hosts Saint Michael's

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 26, 2019) – Despite a goal from freshman Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), the Mercy College field hockey team suffered a 2-1 setback to Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (3-10, 3-9 NE10) have dropped five games in a row, while the Purple Knights (4-12, 4-8 NE10) have won two games in a row.

Sacco recorded her third goal of the year and senior Catherine Brudi (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) added an assist. Sophomore Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) made four saves to take the loss.

Saint Michael's was led by Jenna Puleo who scored two goals and by Anna Hurley who made six saves to earn the win.

Viscione made two saves in the first quarter and Hurley made a stop on a Samantha Lorenc (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) shot to keep the score 0-0 after one quarter.

Hurley made four early saves in the second quarter on shots by Nicole Cotton (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), Sabrina Anderson (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester JR/SR) and Brudi to keep the game scoreless. The Mavericks finally broke through in the 22nd minute when Sacco found the back of the cage following a pass from Brudi to make it 1-0. Viscione made another save late in the second quarter to keep Mercy ahead 1-0 at halftime.

The score remained 1-0 until the 34th minute when Puleo scored her first goal of the day on a breakaway to tie the game up at 1-1. Viscione and Hurley both made one save in the period to send the teams into the fourth quarter tied at 1-1.

The Purple Knights took their first lead in the 54th minute when Puleo deflected in a shot taken by Shelagh Fluharty to make it 2-1. Saint Michael's held off a late Mercy rally to earn a 2-1 victory.

Mercy held a 14-9 edge in shots and a 17-7 advantage in penalty corners.

Head Coach Morgan O'Donohue and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 29th when they host Bentley at 3 p.m.
