SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 2, 2019) – Despite a goal from senior Rebecca Podskoch (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and eight saves from sophomore Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Northeast-10 Conference foe American International College on Wednesday afternoon at Abdow Field.
The Mavericks (2-5, 2-4 NE10) have dropped two of their last three games, while the Yellow Jackets (7-2, 3-2 NE10) have won two games in a row.
Podskoch recorded her second goal of the season and junior Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and senior Samantha Lorenc (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) also had a shot on goal. Viscione made a game-high saves to take the loss.
American International was led by Kirstin Snethlage who had two goals and by Sophie Schulpen who also scored. Nikki Bates made two saves to earn the win.
The teams traded shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of action before the Yellow Jackets broke through in the 21st minute on a Snethlage goal to make it 1-0. The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime with Viscione making three saves in the half.
Lorenc recorded a shot on goal in the 38th minute that was stopped by Bates. A foul was later called on American International which led to a penalty stroke for Podskoch. The senior fired a shot past Bates to tie the score up at 1-1.
Viscione made three more saves in the third quarter before the Yellow Jackets broke the tie in the 43rd minute when Snethlage scored again to make it 2-1. The score remained 2-1 heading into the fourth quarter.
American International opened the fourth quarter by scoring just 55 seconds into the period to increase their lead to 3-1. Viscione would make two more saves, but the Mavericks could not tie the game up leading to a Yellow Jacket win.
American International held a 21-3 edge in shots and a 10-3 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Morgan O'Donohue and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 9th when they host Southern Connecticut State at 3 p.m.
