Cotton Scores Game-Winning Goal in Overtime to Lead Field Hockey to 2-1 Victory Over Southern Connecticut

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 9, 2019) – Powered by the game-winning goal in overtime from junior Nicole Cotton (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), off an assist from senior Rebecca Podskoch (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 2-1 overtime victory over Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (3-5, 3-4 NE10) have won three of their last five games, while the Owls (0-10, 0-7 NE10) remain winless on the year.

Cotton netted her first collegiate goal and Podskoch also had her team-leading third goal of the year. Sophomore Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) made nine saves to earn the win.

Southern Connecticut was led by Karley Welles who scored and by Abigail Kellerman who had an assist. Brianna Craft made three saves to take the loss.

The opening quarter saw Viscione make one save in the frame but neither team could score and headed into the second quarter scoreless.

Craft stopped three shots in the second quarter and Viscione produced another save to send the teams into halftime tied at 0-0.

The score remained 0-0 heading into the 39th minute when the Owls committed a foul which led to a Maverick penalty stroke attempt. Podskoch stepped up and knocked it in to put Mercy up 1-0. The Mavericks held a 1-0 lead at the end of the third quarter with Viscione making six saves in the quarter.

Mercy remained in front heading into the 54th minute when Welles scored following a pass from Kellerman to tie the game up at 1-1. The score remained tied at the end of regulation so overtime was needed.

The Mavericks wasted little in the overtime period as Podskoch sent a cross to the front of the cage where Cotton fired it home to give Mercy a 2-1 victory just one minute and 26 seconds into the overtime period.

Southern Connecticut held a 16-9 edge in shots and Mercy held a 17-13 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Morgan O'Donohue and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 12th when they play at Franklin Pierce at 5 p.m.
