DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2019) – Despite a game-high 27 points and 14 rebounds from redshirt junior Bryan Griffin (Pomona, N.Y./Saint Joseph Regional), the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 101-74 decision to Dominican College on Sunday afternoon in the Mercy College Tip-Off Tournament in Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (0-2) drop their second straight game, while the Chargers (2-0) pick up their second straight win.
Griffin went 10-of-16 from the floor and had two blocks. Junior Dayvon Cuffey (Baltimore, Md./Anne Arundel CC) recorded 14 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Dondre Barnes (Atlanta, Ga./South Atlanta) and junior Nakeem Hamilton (Bronx, N.Y./Hostos CC) had nine points apiece.
Dominican was led by Daraja Rodwell and Tavon Ginyard who both had 21 points.
A pair of Barnes free throws at the 15:11 mark made it 10-8 in favor of the visitors in the first half. Dominican responded with a 13-2 run to take a 23-10 lead with 12:21 remaining in the opening half. A layup from Griffin at the 10:43 mark cut the deficit to nine, 23-14. However, the Chargers answered with a 17-2 run to increase their lead to 40-16 with six minutes remaining in the opening half.
Dominican later built the lead to 26 and headed into halftime with a 55-31 lead.
Mercy started the second half on a 12-3 run, capped off by three free throws from Hamilton, to make it 58-43. The Chargers came right back on an 8-2 run to increase the lead back to 21, 66-45, with 13 minutes left to play.
A Hamilton jumper made it 68-50 at the 11:11 mark before Dominican went on a 16-8 run to put the lead to 26, 84-58, with 4:26 left. The Chargers later increased the lead to a game-high 28 points and held on for the win.
Mercy shot 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the floor, 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from downtown and 74.1 percent (20-of-27) from the foul line. Dominican shot 48.6 percent (34-of-70) from the field, 45.9 percent (17-of-37) from beyond the arc and 88.9 percent (16-of-18) from the charity stripe.
Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, November 13th when they host Felician at 7 p.m.
