Game Preview: Men's Basketball Hosts St. Thomas Aquinas in ECC Opener on Thursday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 2, 2019) – The Mercy College men's basketball team resumes action on Thursday, December 5th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College in their ECC opener.

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy has dropped six of their first seven games to open the 2019-2020 season and is coming off a 77-73 loss to Concordia on Tuesday. Mercy looks to pick up their first win over the Spartans since 2013. The Mavericks are led by redshirt junior Bryan Griffin who has been named to the ECC Honor Roll three times and is third in the ECC in scoring with 20.4 points per game. The forward is also second in the ECC with 10.4 rebounds per game and is fourth shooting 55.0 percent from the floor. Junior Matthew Alectus is second on the team with 11.2 points per game and ranks in the top five in the ECC in three-point shooting (45.8 percent). Junior Nakeem Hamilton is third on the team with 10.2 points per game and is averaging a team-high 2.2 assists per game.

Scouting the Spartans

St. Thomas Aquinas was ranked No. 16 nationally last week in the NABC Coaches Poll but did lose their first game of the season to Dominican last Monday. The Spartans have won seven of their first eight games and are led by one-time ECC Player of the Week senior Sekou Cisse who is averaging a team-high 16.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game on a team-best 59.6 percent shooting. Sophomore Demetre Roberts is second on the team with 16.0 points per game and leads the team with 3.5 assists per contest. Sophomore Osbel Caraballo is third on the team with 13.9 points per game and is second with 7.1 rebounds per game while shooting 56.6 percent from the floor.
